Natures Fuels – Ready to Burn

Did you know that new government laws mean that from February 2021 it’s illegal to burn wood that has a moisture content level higher than 20%?
Natures Fuels is part of ‘Woodsure,’ a certification scheme making it easier to source drier wood with lower pollution impact.

The wood is verified by independent inspectors for conforming moisture content of up to 20%, meaning it burns with less smoke than wetter wood, releasing around half the emissions into the environment.

This firewood is classed as Woodsure ‘Ready to Burn.’

From February 2021, any pre-packaged wood sold in single units with a moisture content of more than 20% is banned and burning it will be illegal.

At Natures Fuels, our Kiln drying process guarantees the correct moisture content and produces ‘Ready to Burn’ firewood.

Responsible storage is vital to keep your wood in good condition and prevent it from absorbing excess moisture and becoming illegal to burn.

So, once you have taken delivery of your kiln dried wood, what is the best way to store it?

5 Simple Steps to store your Natures Fuels kiln dried wood

Your wood will arrive in ‘Ready To Burn’ condition. Follow these 5 storage steps to get the best burn from Natures Fuels

1. Store in a garage, shed or barn

A sheltered place like a garage, shed or barn is best to store kiln dried firewood. When stored indoors, you need to ensure there’s adequate airflow to sustain the logs at a premium ‘Ready to Burn’ moisture level of 20%. More guidance on managing airflow below.

2. Pick a sunny spot for outdoor stores

If you need to store your kiln dried logs outside, make sure they’re kept under good shelter where air can easily reach them. Ideally, stack logs in direct sunlight but protected from rain and snow which increases the moisture level of the wood.

An eco-canvas tarpaulin cover is a useful way to protect kiln dried firewood and bespoke timber log stores are designed to provide superior protection and encourage vital airflow around the logs.

3. Increased airflow is essential

To keep logs dry, air needs to reach them.
You can do this by using a raised log store or a pallet to keep logs away from moist ground.
Don’t stack wood against a wall or place them on grass, as air won’t be able to circulate effectively.
Remember, if your logs absorb more than 20% moisture it threatens their premium ‘Ready to Burn’ quality and worse, releases excess emissions into the atmosphere.

4. Store indoors first for a better burn

For best results, bring your kiln dried wood indoors for a short time before you burn it. This reduces moisture content even further. Store them inside, in a small pile or in a log basket.
You could even up the ‘hygge’ effect by creating a rustic stylish wood store as a centrepiece in your home.

5. Shop small and often for better results

If storage space is an issue, it may be worth buying smaller quantities more often. This may cost slightly more but your wood will burn better with lower moisture content, keeping you warmer for longer and evening out the cost of buying smaller crates and sacks.
